Free EXS24 Drumkit and Samples
This is my Sonor Force 3001 sampled and painstakingly placed into EXS24. There at least 4 velocity levels for each sound. Many more for the snare and kick.
The snare has a left and right hand so you can play rolls on D-1 and E-2 easily. There is also a snare drum with snares off down below the kick at A-1 and G-0. Unzip the folder into ~/Library/Logic/Sampler Instruments and it should show up. (~ means your user directory)
DOWNLOAD THE EXS24 INSTRUMENT (53MB)
Refresh the instrument list in the dropdown of exs24 if logic is open and you should see the instrument. This setting takes advantage of multiple outputs, with the snare, kick and hihats going to discrete outputs for your processing needs. This is my first attempt at sampling an acoustic instrument. EXS24 likes to crash Logic. I had two crashes during my work on this. The workflow goes like this:
- Setup the drumkit with multi-micing and make sure it sounds good.*
- Record hits on each drum, soft to loud with space for the decay in between each hit. I record all the mics and for every hit to get the full room sound of the hit.
- Bounce down to stereo
- Find each group recordings and create a new region out of it
- Audio->Strip Silence
- Audio->Make new audio files from region
- Drop audio into EXS24 and adjust velocities
- Assign groups and pick outputs
- Make sure to save often
Attached is an mp3 of me banging on the sampler and a Logic file with an example setup. CC Share and share alike.

Nice one!
Hey Sam, these are great samples! Really natural sounding and crisp.
Good job, and thanks for allowing us to download them.
Cheers!
Fantastic samples !!!
Thank You for this fantastic samples, incredibly !!! What makes the big sample productions ?!? Your work is much better ...
Thank You very much !
Big sample productions
I added to the steps in the article to include more specific recording instructions. The key is to fully mic the set and record all the mics to mix and use for one sample.
:)
Thanx a lot for those
Thanx a lot for those fun-tastic drum samples! They are really great and I love them! The best samples I know so far!! That's what every home-recorder needs!

PC :(
Fantastic kit. I'd say the best i've heard yet. However, I'm having problems installing the kit to my version of logic and EXS24. I noticed there was a file for MACOSX but this does not seem to be recognised my my system. Is there another file to download that is compatable with p.c. that will organise the key grouping. Without this i'm stuck with some very nice samples but loosing the required realistic sound that i'm sure your work was meant to produce. Could it be a case of me not doing things properly? Any guidance would be appreciated.
Thanks for all your efforts and hard work.

Hello!
I just downloaded the sample and it sounds really great.
It sure is the best drum sound I've ever heard.
But I still can't figure out how to install it in logic.
I can use and hear it when I open the samssonorsetup.logic file but I can't use it in a new file. I can't see it in logic. Please help me use this~ Thank you!
Thanks for these amazing
Thanks for these amazing (and free) sample kits. I also downloaded the kit for ableton. I have recently been working more in ableton and was wondering if there is a easy way to import this kit as a Sampler instrument?
Again, thank you!
Yes those exist
There is a function in ableton to import EXS24 file formats - but you may have to do a bit of cleanup.
I do have the version of this kit in sampler/simpler format here, just to be clear: http://www.samgreene.com/drupal_samgreene/node/130
Install
To install, copy these files to your User:Library:Application Support:Logic:Sampler Instruments
Refresh the instrument list in the dropdown of exs24 if logic is open and you should see the instrument.
You're very welcome! Hope you enjoy.
I downloaded the instrument
I downloaded the instrument but all the files are .aif
shouldn't they be .exs?
Please let me know, and if so tell me there's an easier way to change the extensions all together other than each one individually.
Gary...
Those are the audio files. There should be an exs file in a directory above those.
Great kit
Love the ride! what cymbal?
Cymbal
It's a Sabian B8Pro - came with a pair of hats and a crash for $100 8 years ago. The ride is the only decent cymbal in the pack though.
Great Sounds
Great work! Thank you
Cool Stuff man!
Hey thanks for this! I'm planning on using this one as the default soundpack for my wip drum engine thingy. I'd be glad to share it too once I've finished it :D
Really useful
